Abstract

Recent work  in artificial intelligence, drawing inspiration from the human cognitive  sciences, has produced artificial agents with capacities resembling  episodic memory. In this talk, I aim to draw philosophical attention to  artificial episodic memory, and consider how (if at all) they might be  used to advance our understanding of biological episodic memory. In  particular, I consider the significance of artificial episodic memory  for debates about episodic memory's role in cognition and its  phylogenetic distribution.
