Abstract

There is a  strong intuition that a zombie’s life is never good or bad for the  zombie. This suggests a link between consciousness and the good life.  What, if anything, explains this apparent link? In this paper, I  consider five possible explanations of this link, plus the option of  rejecting the intuition that a zombie’s life is never worth living. I  point out the considerable costs of each option, and although one of the  putative explanations strikes me as somewhat less problematic than the  others, I conclude that we do have something of a puzzle on our hands  regarding the link between consciousness and the good life.
